Radio Merit Badge Update

I just wanted to send out a note to remind everyone that our Court of Honor is coming soon and would love to see all our scouts complete this merit badge.  Most scouts only have 1 or 2 requirements remaining.  Please click on the checklist below in order to see where your scout stands in the process of completion.  As I have stated to the scouts, this is not difficult if you use the book that has been uploaded for your convenience to our website.  It has all the information that is needed to be able to complete the requirements that were not covered in the meetings.  I also can help if needed.  I will be at next weeks meeting.

Winterplace Ski Trip

We are taking reservations for the Troop 17 ski trip to Winterplace, West Virginia on January 8th & 9th.  We plan to leave

Friday after school and ski during the day on Saturday.  We will return Saturday evening.  The exact departure and return time will be announced at a later date.

The total cost of the trip depends upon whether you want to ski or snowboard.  If you want to ski, the trip cost will be $105.00.  The trip cost to snowboard will be $125.00.  This includes a lift ticket, equipment rental, and one night’s accommodations with breakfast and lunch on Saturday.  Each Scout is responsible for his meals on Friday and Saturday evenings (i.e., fast food stops enroute).

We will be staying at the Mountain House Sleepover at the resort.  Each person will be provided an air mattress, but you will need to take a sleeping bag and pillow.  Of course, you will need your toiletries and appropriate clothing for skiing.  (Ski bibs and helmets are available to be rented on a first come first serve basis.  The Scout is responsible for this cost.)

The cost of the trip may be paid in installments, with one-half (1/2) due on or before December 8, 2009 with the remainder due no later than January 5, 2010.  (Checks should be made to BSA Troop 17

If you have any questions, please call me at 584-9637 or 269-3615.

We look forward to seeing you on the slopes!

Personal Management Merit Badge #3

Troop 17 Parents:

The troop has completed the classroom part of the Personal Management MB. I have attached a worksheet showing the requirements each scout needs to complete to earn the merit badge. I will be at the scout hut from 7:00 to 7:30 Tuesday night to meet individually with any scouts who want to turn in a completed requirement.

The One Week Planner (requirement #8) and the Career Research (requirement #10) can both be completed this week at home and turned in to me on Tuesday night. They can also bring their workbook for me to review and check off requirements #4, #5 and #6 which should have been done in class.

Your scout should be keeping their 13 week income and expense record in order to complete that requirement in the spring.

Contact me if you have any questions. I enjoyed spending time with your scouts. They are a terrific group of young men.

Personal Management Merit Badge Update #2

Troop 17 Personal Management Merit Badge Worksheet.xls

I wanted to give you an update on your son's progress toward the Personal Management Merit Badge. On Tuesday night we covered requirements #4, #5 and #6. Your son should have completed those sections in his Merit Badge Workbook during the class. At home he should be continuing to keep his 13 week record of income and expenses and should have completed a budget for those 13 weeks to compare to his actual results. The budget and tracking form is in the Workbook under requirement #3.

We will complete requirements #7 and #9 in class next week.

During this week the scouts each need to:

1. For requirement #8, they need to keep a 7 day record of where they spent their time each day recording the time spent in each activity as well as the time they woke up and went to bed. They will be required to go over this with a merit badge counselor to help them understand the value of time management.

2. For requirement #10 they need to research a career in which they have an interest and bring their research to class next Tuesday night. For that career they need to know education requirements, skills needed, experience and licensing requirements, and income expectations.

If you or your scout have any questions please let me know.

From Melanie Hawks, the popcorn queen
Popcorn Money Due Tomorrow

Hello Troop 17.  Order forms, money and prize selection is due at tomorrow’s meeting.  If your son cannot attend, please get the order to me ASAP.  I have to count/balance/prepare the order and transmit it Wednesday.  I cannot wait for outstanding orders.

I would like to thank all the scouts and parents that helped with our show-n-sell events at Lowes’ Home Improvements, Lowe’s Foods and Food Lion (especially the parents).

The hours below are the service hours worked by each scout selling popcorn for the troop at a show-n-sell event.  In addition to service hours, they get credit for popcorn sold towards their prize selections.  They get prize credit  for $25 per hour worked (ie take the door-to-door sales sheet, look at total sold and add the amount of prize credit  to determine total for selecting prizes).

I will use Davis as an example:

His sales sheet shows his door-to-door sales as $350  which qualifies him for a level 4 prize.

He worked 6 hours x $25= $150  prize credit

$350

$150

$500

He can now choose a prize from Level 5 - $425+  (or a combination of prizes up to $500)  because of helping the troop show-n-sell popcorn.  I know this is confusing - sorry.  I will be there Tuesday to answer questions.  Thanks, Melanie

Personal Management Merit Badge Update

Subject: Personal Management Merit Badge

Troop 17 Personal Management Merit Badge Worksheet.xls

Attached is the Troop 17 roster along with the worksheet I am using to track each boy's progress on the Personal Management merit badge. Please note that some of the requirements will be completed during the three class sessions. Some will need to be completed by the scouts outside the sessions as well.

The most difficult requirement is the preparation of an income and expense budget covering the months of November through February followed by actual income and expense tracking during that period to compare to budget. Worksheets are included in the Merit Badge Workbook to use for this requirement. It will take some oversight by parents to help prepare the budget and keep the scouts focused on this task for three months. If your son does not currently have control of any money on a weekly basis through handling his own lunch money and an allowance or earnings from chores, you might want to consider that during the next three months to make this experience more meaningful.

At next week's meeting we will discuss time management and they will be asked to track the use of their time on a daily basis for one week. A worksheet is included for that in the Workbook so when they return from scouts next Tuesday you may want to post that somewhere conspicuous to help remind them to record their activities and bring it to class on the 10th.

I enjoyed the time spent last night with the troop and look forward to helping them successfully complete this eagle required merit badge. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Personal Management Merit Badge

Fairfax Reynolds begins teaching our Personal Management merit badge this Tuesday. Please make every effort to attend the meetings for this Eagle required badge.

Also, go to our website and click on the advancement tab for the Personal Management merit badge worksheet. I suggest that each scout bring in a printed copy to the next few meetings. We plan to have a link to the mb book on our website soon. The pamphlets are also available at the scout store.

Parents of Star and Life scouts (First Class scouts will attend next year) please mark your calendars for November 12th  @ 7:00 for a meeting at the Macedonia Lutheran Church where the Alamance district will have its annual Life-to-Eagle presentation. I suggest that both parents and boys attend this meeting. After the meeting I will gather our troop for further discussion and the logistics of how troop 17 handles the process of Life-to-Eagle.

Should you have any questions, please let me know.

Scoutmaster Note

From the pen of Popcorn Queen, Melanie Hawks

We will be selling popcorn at Food Lion on South Church Street on Saturday, October 24th   (HT was not available)

Based on last weekend, I am tweaking the schedule for this week – starting at 10:30 rather than 9:00.  Some of you committed to me when the hours were different.  I have put you in time slots.  If they no longer work, let me know.

There are still MANY boys that have not worked a shift.  I know we are all busy, but please try and help out Saturday.  Both Clayton and Matthew have already worked a shift, so I can relieve them if I get some help from some other scouts.

Thanks for your help.  We did OK last week.  I am hoping we do better this week at FLion .   We really need for the troop to do well with popcorn, so we don’t have to look at other fundraisers.

Like the other 2 sales events, I will be there with the popcorn/table/cash box/chairs/water/ etc by 10:15.  All you need to do is show up.  Bring gloves and a hat if cold.

Special thanks to Deb Schomburg, Karoleigh Allred, Lisa McDaniel and John Maynard for helping last week.  Also, Burke Allred worked 2 shifts and Davis (as always) has to do all the loading/unloading throughout October as well as work shifts.

Remember the boys should be selling door-to-door until Tuesday, November 3rd when order forms, money and prize selections are due.
